Visit to Ramona Farms

We recently visited Ramona Farms, Pima Indian family owned, in Sacaton, AZ.  They grow traditional crops in the desert including tepary beans, corn, wheat, alfalfa, and more!  Please visit and support them!

Soup & Diabetes?

Here is a question I recently received from

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last spring.  I enjoy eating hearty soups in the fall and winter months.  Can I still eat soup?  Are there any soups that are better for me to eat than others?

Answer:  Soup can be a healthy and economical meal anytime of the year.  Some varieties can be high in fat and sodium so consider these suggestions when selecting a soup:

  • choose broth based soups over cream based soups to reduce fat and calories
  • look for soups with lentils, barley, or beans to increase fiber
  • select low or reduced sodium soups when available or make your own soup to limit sodium content
  • opt for soups containing non-starchy vegetables to increase your vegetable servings for the day
  • look for soups containing lean protein such as skinless chicken breast over high fat proteins
